As the town continues to grow, more fast food franchise are looking at Milford to expand their business. Jersey Mike’s and Arby’s are just two of the chain restaurants who have opened locations in the town, and it appears that several more are looking at coming as well.

“We were working with Chipotle before, but you have to meet their timeframes and if you don’t, the ball gets dropped,” Art Helmick, owner of Movies 9 said eight months ago when a conditional use was approved on property he owns that formerly held a Wendy’s. “They’re back at the table and we had hoped to have a contract signed before coming to council, but this takes some time.”

Currently, there is some construction work being conducted on the site, which could indicate Chipotle is opening in Milford although neither Chipotle or Helmick would confirm. Arby’s had a final site plan approved in February 2023 to open a new, 3,000 square foot restaurant where Shore Distributor’s once stood. That building is currently under construction although an opening date has not been confirmed.

Earlier this year, Burger King and McDonald’s both closed for renovations. Burger King has been working to revitalize their brand over the past few years, updating their logo and branding. The next step was to revitalize their stores.

“Customers will begin seeing something different in 2024,” Tom Curtis, President of Burger King US and Canada said in a television interview. “We are unveiling a new restaurant design we call “Sizzle” which feature many digital kiosks, a streamlined drive-thru and pickup lanes as we are leaning in where most of our business comes, the drive-thru.”

McDonald’s also renovated their Milford location recently, opening in early May after being closed for about a month. This is the second remodel of this location in four years as the store was closed in 2020 for an update as well. This renovation included kitchen expansion and additional space for mobile pickup and delivery orders.

Other Milford fast food restaurants have made adjustments to make things easier for customers as well. Chick-fil-A recently received approval from the Board of Adjustments to revamp their drive-thru, creating two lanes for picking up orders rather than one.

The fast food companies seem to focus on major highways with the majority on Dupont Boulevard. However, Buffalo Wild Wings has recently opened on Coastal Highway, and it is likely more fast food locations will open along that stretch of roadway, especially with the new Bayhealth Sussex Campus nearby. There are currently hundreds of acres of commercial lands available east of Route 1 in the vicinity of the hospital which could accommodate fast food locations as well.
