The Boys & Girls Club of Delaware has adopted the slogan “Great Futures Start Here” and according to their website that commitment has produced some striking numbers. Eighty-seven percent of Club kids finish high school as compared to 66% of all young people in the United States. The college graduation rate for Club kids is 56% higher than the national average. Statewide, the Boys & Girls Club of Delaware serves 35,000 youth, which is roughly 1 out of every 5 school-aged children. Their mission is to inspire youth and help them realize their “full potential as responsible, productive, caring citizens.”
The Greater Milford Boys & Girls Club has been dedicated to being much more than just a location to take children before and after school. They are a licensed childcare provider but offer structured programs with a focus on education and character building. After each school day the students are given an hour to focus on homework and the accelerated reader program. The Club also offers clinics after school work is completed which includes art, swimming, computer lab, and the gymnasium. These programs and activities are what make this program a success. “It provides a great learning environment during those critical hours after school for children who may not otherwise get that opportunity.” claims Margaux Azzanesi, Regional Development Director for Boys & Girls Clubs of Delaware. Margaux acknowledges that the real testament to the success of The Greater Milford Boys & Girls Club comes directly from the children themselves. Cleveland Mesidor, a twelve year old who attends Milford Middle School, is one of those children.
“For the several years that I’ve been here everyone has been very caring and considerate. This Club has taught me many things such as responsibility, honesty, and consideration. The Club is like my second home. There are many things that I like about this Club. The staff is excellent. We joke around and they help me when I’m in hard times and homework. My favorite areas are the game room, pool, Masterminds, gym and computer lab. And my favorite aftertime activity is Uno. Like I said before this Club is like a second home not just for me but for my two younger brothers. Without the Club I wouldn’t be where I am now.”
The Greater Milford Boys & Girls Club inspires many children in the Milford area to reach their full potential. Being a purchase of care organization, the Boys and Girls Club works with the Delaware Division of Social Services to assist working parents with daily child care needs.
The Greater Milford Boys & Girls Club is unique in Delaware because the new age facility offers activities for adults as well. The Club has an Olympic-size swimming pool that is used for water aerobics classes and a full-size gymnasium that hosts basketball and soccer camps. The gym is open for adult activities on every Monday, Thursday, and Friday from 6 p.m.-9 p.m.
With a focus on education, recreation, and social interaction the Boys & Girls Club in Milford is living up to their slogan “Great Futures Start Here!” For many kids, they have been able to bridge the gap between school and home with a productive, healthy alternative.
