Abbott’s Mill Offers Outdoor Fun

Apr 13 2011 /

Located in a charming, rural setting in southern Delaware, Abbott’s Mill Nature Center is a real hidden jewel to the Milford community. As the weather warms up the opportunities for outdoor recreation are abundant on and around Abbott’s Pond. Hiking, canoeing, fishing and bird watching are just a few activities that can be enjoyed right here in our backyard.

Abbott’s Mill Nature Center, with its preserved, working mill, is owned by Delaware’s Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs and operated by the Delaware Nature Society. Located along Abbott’s Pond just southwest of Milford, the Nature Center manages 313 acres. This diverse nature preserve supports a variety of forested, field and wetland habitats and includes hiking trails, boardwalks and teaching stations that provide educational opportunities for all ages.

Every Thursday the staff at the Abbott’s Mill Nature Center hosts their weekly nature walk through various parts of the reserve. Directed by a professional tour guide, these nature walks help promote environmental consciousness and create awareness for participants of the fragility of the local ecosystem.  The trails are open to the public from dawn until dusk, 365 days a year.

“These trails are really a personal place that is accessible to people in Milford. It is a great way to enjoy the outdoors without having to put up with the traffic and crowds at the beach,” commented Jason Beale, Manager at the Abbott’s Mill Nature Center.

The staff at Abbott’s Mill Pond is widely known for their outreach programs for school-age children.  These programs teach kids at an early age the importance of their surrounding environment and an appreciation for the flora and fauna that fill the woods surrounding the Milford community.  Children as young as two are participating in these programs, continuing Abbott Mill’s motto “educating today, preserving tomorrow.” For a list of Abbott’s Mill Programs visit them online at www.delawarenaturesociety.org.

On Thursday, April 14 Abbott’s Mill Pond will be joining the rest of the State of Delaware in celebrating Delaware’s Week of Service.  The Abbott’s Mill Spring Spruce Up will help get the historic grist mill and nature center ready for spring by cleaning the turbine, trail maintenance and landscaping.  For more information call Volunteer Coordinator Christy Belardo at 302-239-2334, ext. 111 or Christy@delawarenaturesociety.org.

The Abbott’s Mill Nature Center is always looking for individuals to help volunteer their efforts to help the preserve.  Those interested should call 302-422-9847.
