Boys & Girls having some fun at the Club. The Greater Milford Boys and Girls Club held their Summer Fun Club Training on Thursday, May 26. Staff members of the Boys & Girls Club of Delaware, from Kent and Sussex Counties, joined together for training and preparation for the summer program that will take place between June 13 and August 26.

The Summer Fun Club in Milford will offer members an entertaining summer experience with their peers that is rooted in enrichment and educational activities. Led by professional summer counselors, children will have an opportunity to interact and engage with their other young adults on a daily basis.

Before staff members become qualified they will go through the program themselves, learning and experiencing everything the kids will during the summer. Through the summer program the Boys & Girls Club’s mission is to ‘inspire and enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens.’

“We want to make sure that all of our staff have the necessary skills to assist the children in learning,” stated Dorian Mendez-Vaz, Executive Director for the Greater Milford Boys and Girls Club. “The first job of the Boys & Girls staff is to build a positive relationship with each child.”

A typical day at camp will begin with open play and athletic activities while teaching kids health and life skills. Children will then move to educational groups as they visit the computer labs and the literacy circle. They will also develop social and artistic skills by engaging with other kids during youth development activities and arts and creativity time.

The Boys & Girls Club programs promote the development of young people by instilling four senses in each child: sense of competence, a sense of usefulness, a sense of belonging and a sense of power or influence. These four senses are fully implemented in the strategy for teaching kids during the Summer Fun Club.

“The Boys & Girls Club creates an environment which helps children achieve their full potential,” commented Dorian Mendez-Vaz.

The 2011 Summer Fun Club at the Greater Milford Boys & Girls Club will be held from June 13- August 26, Monday through Friday from 6:30 am -6:00 pm. There will be three age-based programs at the Club; Kinder Kidz at Work ages 3-5, Summer Fun Club ages 6-12 and Teen Program ages 13-16. The weekly rate for the program is $115.00 per child. Sibling discounts are available and scholarships are available upon application approval.

The Greater Milford Boys & Girls Club is located at 101 DE Veterans Blvd., Milford, DE and can reached at 302-422-4453 or online at www.bgclubs.org.
