Downtown Milford Incorporated (DMI) announced their decision to hire a new Executive Director last month and on Thursday, June 2 Lee Nelson was introduced as the individual to be hired for the position during their monthly meeting. Lee and his wife Anne Jenkins moved to Delaware from the state of Georgia to take the position and start a new life in the town of Milford. Nelson is looking forward to starting his new career and is excited to continue the achievements that DMI has brought to the city of Milford.
Downtown Milford Inc. is a volunteer driven, grassroots organization that promotes development of the traditional business district of Milford. DMI is focused on the preservation of Milford’s historic buildings, helping the economic restructuring of existing businesses and recruiting new ones, and promoting downtown as a destination.
Mr. Nelson has a background and experience in main street management from working with the town of Union Point, Georgia. His focus was in Economic Development as he concentrated on maintaining historical preservation for the southern town. Lee is fascinated by the downtown area and the possibilities it has to offer the city of Milford and surrounding areas. Downtown Milford Inc.’s motto of River Town, Art Town, Home town is central to his vision of helping Milford become a destination.
“This motto is a great vision for downtown and I hope it becomes a destination for these reasons.” stated Mr. Nelson. “[Milford] strikes me as a place that has great potential and I think that my skill sets will help provide the town with great opportunities.”
Lee has worked for five years in main street management and understands business needs through his personal experiences. He has worked for twenty-three years in business and finance with several financial institutions including CitiBank and Wells Fargo. His wife Anne Jenkins also has business experience and will be opening her own art gallery downtown.
In the following weeks and months Lee will be visiting businesses downtown and introducing himself and his objectives with Downtown Milford Inc. He will be asking business owners about their needs and what DMI can do to help them flourish. Mr. Nelson will also be working on growing the volunteers and their services to help with the numerous projects and events that DMI hosts throughout the year.
The Downtown Milford Inc. programs that are most visible to the community include the Annual Bug and Bud Festival, the Holiday Stroll, Riverwalk Arts & Jazz Festival and the Farmers Market. They also have been promoting a new community branding initiative designed to give Milford a common identity and coordinating cooperative advertising opportunities for downtown merchants.
Lee has taken the position of Executive Director for DMI just in time for their newest event, Movies & Music. Partnering with WSFS Bank and the Milford Public Library, DMI will be hosting films and live entertainment Wednesday night beginning June 8 to August 17 at 7pm at the Library Amphitheatre. Each night will be family oriented to encourage more locals to venture downtown and browse all Milford has to offer.
