Event Will Recognize Milford Among Winners of Tourism Award

Kent County Tourism is pleased to announce the 2011 Tourism Attraction of the Year as the Downtown Delaware Resource Center; Kent County’s two Main Street communities of Milford and Dover; and Smyrna, a Main Street commercial district affiliate. All four will be recognized at the awards presentation on Friday, November 4 at the 20th Annual Celebration of Tourism luncheon.

“Kent County Tourism has reached another milestone as we celebrate our 20th year of recognizing individuals and organizations for excellence in tourism in Kent County,” said Cynthia S. Small, Executive Director. “Over the years, we have honored Delaware State Fair, Dover International Speedway, Delaware State Parks, First State Heritage Park and more recently the Air Mobility Command Museum for their roles in Kent County’s tourism industry. This year, we recognize our unique small towns and those working diligently to preserve our county’s unique sense of place, as well as grow and support small businesses.”

Downtown Delaware is a resource center within the Delaware Economic Development Office (DEDO) that focuses on downtown revitalization, with particular emphasis on business development, vacancy reduction and proactive planning for selection and placement of retail goods and services in commercial business districts throughout Delaware. Downtown Delaware, Downtown Dover Partnership, Downtown Milford Incorporated and Smyrna Downtown Renaissance Association will accept the awards.

In the past couple of years, we’ve seen huge strides being made in Milford, Dover and Smyrna. With the new stores, the branding and just the visibility they have helped us bring to Kent County, it was a natural choice,” commented Cynthia S. Small. “Progress may seem slow, but think of it this way — those downtowns did not die overnight. It was a slow process, so resuscitating them isn’t going to happen overnight either.”

The20th annual event will celebrate tourism and its critical importance in the state of Delaware .To date, event sponsors include: Delaware State News, Media Sponsor; Ordway Group CPAs, Awards Sponsor; First State Heritage Park, Dessert Sponsor; and Mainstay Suites, Table/Party Favor Sponsor. Additional sponsorships are still available, and silent auction items are being sought.

The event will be held at The Outlook at the Duncan Center, Downtown Dover. A “Best of Kent County” silent auction will be held starting at 11:30 a.m., followed by a luncheon and awards ceremony. Additional awards, including Tourism Person of the Year and Tourism Volunteer of the Year, will also be presented.

The event is open to the public. Cost is $35 per person and tables of eight can be reserved for $250. For information on sponsorship, donating a silent auction item or tickets, contact Kent County Tourism, 302-734-7511.
