Emory, Wiley Sworn in as New School Board Members

Pat Emory takes his seat as President of Milford School Board

On Monday, July 11 newly elected School Board Members Renate Wiley and Pat Emory were welcomed to the Milford School District Board of Education. At the annual reorganizational meeting Marvin Schelhouse swore in both Mrs. Wiley and Mr. Emory who will both serve a 5-year term.

Renate Wiley defeated Deborah O’Neill by a margin of 69.57% to 30.43% (551 out of a total of 792 votes). Mrs. Wiley was a school nurse at the Milford Senior High School for 19 years. Prior to her service with the district she was a public health nurse for 10 years. During her tenure with the school district Renate was the class advisor for all three of her daughters’ classes, involved with the peer listener student group and a representative of the Milford Education Association (MEA).

Patrick Emory won his election by a margin of 72.8% (578 out of a total of 792 votes). Pat Emory is a 7th generation Milfordian with a family background in farming in the upper Sussex and lower Kent County area. Pat has worked over 26 years for the State of Delaware starting as an environmental protection officer for the Department of Natural Resources. He now is Director of the Office of Communication Services. Pat has served 2 full terms on the Milford School Board and will now serve a third term.

After each new member was sworn in Ms. Sharon Kanter acted as temporary chairperson to ask for the nomination for the office of President of the Milford School Board. Patrick Emory was elected by the Board as the new President by a vote of 5-3. As newly elected President, Mr. Emory asked for nominations for the Vice President of the Milford School Board. Nominees for the position included former Vice President Marvin Schelhouse and Mark Schanne. Mr. Schanne won the election of Vice President by a vote of 6-2.

Mrs. Wiley and Mr. Emory will serve a 5-year term that will include the first year of the Mispillion Elementary School, the implementation of the new district-wide uniform policy and several other challenges. The next regular Milford School District Board of Education Meeting will be held on Monday, August 22 at 7pm at the Milford Middle School Board Room.
