State Rep. Jack Peterman displays a keepsake pen used by Gov. Jack Markell to create a new initiative intended to help Delaware’s next generation of farmers.  Senate Bill 117, signed into law at the Delaware State Fair on July 28th, establishes a new loan program to help entry-level farmers purchase agricultural land.  As a condition of the loans, made through the Agricultural Lands Preservation Foundation., a permanent preservation easement is attached to the deed at the time of closing, safeguarding the acquired property from any threat of future development.  Gov. Markell said Delaware needs new farmers, noting that the average age of farmers in The First State is currently 57.  All the legislators in the photo sponsored, co-sponsored, or supported the enactment of legislation.
