The newest edition to the Milford School District, Mispillion Elementary School, is set to open its doors to students on Wednesday, August 31. The state-of- the- art facility is located next to the campus of Lulu Ross Elementary on Lovers Lane and will provide educational programming for approximately 720 students in grades 1 through 5.

Principal Susan Donahue is filled with anticipation about the opening this month and is looking forward to seeing all the new faces; faculty and students.

“I’m ready,” exclaimed Ms. Donahue. “I am looking forward to not only being the principal of a physical building but providing teachers and students with the best programming for the success of the kids.”

Ms. Donahue has been with the Milford School District since 1992 and was the principal at Morris Early Childhood Center for three years. She has been busy this year attending construction progress meetings, working with the personnel office to staff the building and visiting the district elementary schools to ensure consistent programs. Ms. Donahue has spent the last year preparing the building for the arrival of the students and their parents. It has been very advantageous for her to be part of the whole planning, construction and curriculum process from the very beginning.

Being a completely new facility Ms. Donahue will have several challenges to meet which she is excited to take on. “The challenges are the things that are unknown,” commented Ms. Donahue. “The teachers and children will help determine how the school works when it is filled with people.”

The students will help shape the future of the school from the very beginning. During the first day of school the students will vote on the school’s mascot. The three choices, the Mispillion Mariners, River Otters and Terrapins, were selected among hundreds of student submissions.

“I look forward to seeing the kids on the first day and being able to provide a great atmosphere for learning. It has been lonely over on this side of campus and I cannot wait for it to be filled with excited students and teachers,” commented Mrs. Donahue.

Parents and students will have a sneak peak of the completed building on Wednesday, August 10 during District Enrollment Night, which begins at 5pm. Student Placement Letters will be delivered by the middle of August and supply lists will be posted on the Mispillion Elementary School website.
