Delaware State Police Press Release
Delaware State Troopers Tuesday August 16th recovered the body of Harvey D. Griffith Jr-44 of Houston Delaware. Griffith was wanted for charges related to a domestic disturbance and aggravated menacing of Law Enforcement Officers.
Delaware State Police Helicopter pilots were taking aerial photographs of the area where Griffith was last seen around 11:30 a.m. yesterday. While flying above a field State Police Pilots observed an area where several large birds were flying and began to concentrate their efforts in that vicinity.
The State Police Helicopter landed near the area where the birds were last seen and the area was checked. Griffith’s body was located in a marsh not far from where he was last seen on Tuesday August 9th. Delaware State Police K9 checked the surrounding area on August 9th however lost the track near the marsh.
Members of the Houston Fire Department were called to assist in the extraction of Griffith’s body. Houston Fire personnel utilized a Bobcat style 6 wheel utility vehicle to enter the marsh and recover Griffith’s body.
Once Griffith’s body was recovered from the marsh Delaware State Police detectives located identifying marks (tattoo) which assisted in his identification. A preliminary check of Griffith’s body revealed an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to his chest.
Griffith’s body has been turned over to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner who will perform an autopsy.
