Local Relay for Life Team Helps Fight Cancer

Although the American Cancer Society‘s Relay for Life Event in Milford only happens once a year in July, the Heart and Hands Relay Team works year-round to prepare for the occasion and raise awareness and money for cancer research. The event as a whole gives individuals across the community a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember love ones lost and fight back against the disease. This year’s event included 36 teams from the Milford community that committed to walking around the track throughout the entire night.

Heart and Hands Relay Team are looking to expand the number of team members to increase their ability to raise money for the Relay for Life event held at the Milford Middle School. They have hosted several events to raise money for cancer research over the years including their AUCE Spaghetti Dinner and Auction, Holiday Craft Sale and Spring Bazaar and look to continue their success through more community involvement.

“It is a great way to help your community and those affected by cancer,” commented team member Karen Bunting. “I have lost too many people to cancer; grandparents, friends, aunts and uncles. You just decide that you have to do something about it.”

According to Karen team members will be an active partner in saving lives by raising money for research and a cure for cancer.
Fundraisers for Heart and Hands are held throughout the year as each member is asked to raise at least $100 for the American Cancer Society.

“As a team we set our goal at $5,000 per year,” stated Karen. “This past year we raised a little over $5,635 and we expect to raise more by the event this year.”

Individuals looking to join the team are urged to call Karen Buniting at 302-422-6144 and visit their American Cancer fan page at http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR?pg=team&fr_id=41168&team_id=1003892.
