Pearl Lady Brings International Expertise to Milford

Joan Mulholland, The Pearl Lady, moved her corporate headquarters to Milford, Delaware in 2000 from Hong Kong and has recently joined several other artists in The Studio Upstairs located on the second floor of 4 Park Avenue in downtown Milford. Joan has traveled the world over following her desire for fashion as she worked with international businesses in Latin America, Europe and Asia.

After receiving her Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts and Fashion from the Pratt Institute in New York and her Master’s Degree in International Business at American University in Washington D.C, Ms. Mulholland went to work in the garment industry in Latin America. Working with designers such as Liz Claiborne and Levi Strauss, she helped bring large manufacturing companies into foreign countries including the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica and Honduras.

Joan moved into the private sector with a Germany company named Otto Versand working on a catalogue that sold throughout Western Europe and was sent to Hong Kong where her love of pearls began to develop.

“While living in Hong Kong I always enjoyed visiting the pearl farms and seeing pearls of all colors, shapes and qualities in the open markets,” commented Ms. Mulholland.

While living in Hong Kong, Joan started making pearl jewelry for herself, family and friends, which she shipped across the world. When Joan returned to Germany she started to make pearls for private clients and continued to do so as she moved back to the United States. Back in the States, Ms. Mulholland worked with the Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts, Delaware Art Museum, Winterthur, the Smithsonian and the National Gallery of Art to create historical and unique pieces of jewelry that were sold by those institutions.

Her new studio showroom in Milford has allowed Joan to once again create jewelry for private clients. The Pearl Lady features her own creations ranging from handmade freshwater pearl to semiprecious jewelry. In The Studios Upstairs Joan creates customized jewelry for each individual who walks in the door.

“It is so much fun working directly with the customer,” commented Joan. “Where else can you get exactly what you want. The Studios Upstairs is a beautiful place to work and surrounding yourself with other artists creates an inspiring atmosphere.”

Ms. Mulholland’s extensive background in fashion and business allows her to stay on top of the latest trends in fashion and enables her to create unique pieces that can only be found at The Pearl Lady. The showroom includes over 400 different styles of necklaces, bracelets, and earrings. Since all the pieces are individually selected, strung and hand knotted, Joan can easily custom make or tailor any piece to suit the customer’s particular wishes.

The Pearl Lady’s new studio is located on the second floor at 4 Park Avenue and can be entered around the corner from The Mispillion Art League. The studio showroom is open Wednesday through Saturday 10 am to 4 pm or anytime by appointment. The Pearl Lady can be reached by calling 302-228-2287 or sending an email to
