Education Secretary Helps Celebrate Dr. Seuss

Mar 6 2012 /

Children at Mispillion and Lulu Ross Elementary Schools joined the country in the celebration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday on March 2. The observance of the world-renowned children’s author was a fitting end to “I Love Reading Month” that was held throughout the month of February at each school. Students focused on their reading with activities, contents and even a chance to legally break the dress code by wearing a shirt adorned with a word.

Several staff members read 3 different Delaware Diamond books that were streamed during student lunches the final week in February and each student prepared artwork for their special guests on Friday, March 2. That morning children were surprised during classes with a visit from Cat In The Hat and Delaware Secretary of Education, Dr. Lillian Lowery.

The three classes in the Mispillion Elementary school that scored highest on the Accelerated Reader Program had the honor of having a story read to them by Dr. Lowery. She sat down with a third, forth and fifth grade class and read them a book called “Chrysanthemum”, which told the story of a little girl who overcame bullying of her unusual name.

“I have to say this is the best part of my week,” commented Secretary of Education Dr. Lowery. “This really keeps me grounded on what we do every single day [in the Department of Education]”

Principal Donahue of Mispillion Elementary explained to the students that as Secretary of Education, Dr. Lowery is in charge of all the principals and teachers in the state of Delaware.

“We had a very successful February at the school,” commented Principal Donahue. “The students prepared all week for their special visit.”
