On Thursday, March 8 Glenda and Chris Adkins and other owners of The Rookery Golf Course in Milton, made the decision to take over the private course at the Shawnee Country Club located in Milford. Just 12 miles north of their course located at the crossroads of Route 1 and Route 16 just East of the city of Milton, the new course in Milford will become known as The Rookery North at Shawnee. The Rookery will take over all operations of the club including the golf course, clubhouse, pool and tennis courts. All of the facilities at the Rookery North at Shawnee will be open to the public.
A third-generation Milford family, Chris and Glenda Adkins have years of experience with the golf and food industry. Opening The Rookery in the fall of 1999, the Adkins are preparing for their 12th summer at the Milton course where approximately 200 members
play each year. Glenda Adkins has been in the restaurant and catering business for eleven years and studied culinary art in California under Chef Karsten Hart at the Château de Sureau. The two also ran a successful restaurant on Rehoboth Avenue in Rehoboth Beach from 2007 to 2011.
“We hope to make The Rookery North at Shawnee an asset to the Milford community,” commented Mr. Adkins. “This will make the property available for many people to play golf when they have the time to do so, whether that is once a year or once a week.”
Current Golf Membership rates, at both The Rookery North and South, are $1,350 for single membership and $2,200 for family membership. Membership will allow players to enjoy both Rookery facilities . There will also be a Pool and Tennis Membership available for $550 for a family membership or $275 to be added to a golf membership package. All facilities are open to the public as daily passes will be available for the golf course, swimming pool and tennis courts. The clubhouse will serve lunch and be open for special events and catering services.
“Our plan is to be accommodating to what was offered by the club in the past,” commented Glenda Adkins. “We look forward to hosting the Milford and Lake Forest Golf teams and offering the venue for special events.”
The Adkins will look to draw golfers from across the Delmarva Peninsula by offering the same great course that made the Shawnee Country Club a success in years past. John Wallett will be the PGA professional at The Rookery North, offering players the opportunity to increase their skill level or simply learn to enjoy the game more. Mr. Wallett has been the head golf professional at Kings Creek Country Club and assistant pro at the Rehoboth Beach Country Club for several years.
“As of today the course is open to the public,” commented Mr. Adkins. “It is our intention to operate an exciting, inviting atmosphere.”
The Rookery North at Shawnee plans to hold a grand re-opening of the facility in May.
