Hill’s Fresh Plants & Produce Stand, located 2.5 miles West of Milford on Milford-Harrington Highway (Route 14), will officially open for the season on Friday, March 30. Since 1996 Tina Hill and her family have been providing fresh, local plants, produce and meats to the Greater Milford Area. The opening of the stand signifies the coming of spring, summer and the growing season for plants, fruits and vegetables.
“It is always exciting opening in the Spring and seeing everyone you have not seen all winter,” commented Owner Tina Hill. “We have been in the greenhouses since February and it will be great to see everyone again.”
Sixteen years ago Tina and Marvin Hill started the roadside stand under a 10’ x 20’ canopy bringing in most of their products from outside local farms. The business grew quickly as a local favorite and during their second summer the Hills built a small structure on the property. Just one year later, the first greenhouse on the property was built and the Hill’s began to provide more plants and produce that were grown on-site. The Hills have continued the tradition for 16 years and were also honored in 2010 with the Century Farm Award and the Historic Structures Award from the Delaware Department of Agriculture for the farm where the produce market stands.
Hill’s produce market grows and sells bedding and vegetable plants, herbs, local meats, potted plants and produce. The items that are not grown by the Hill’s come from all local growers within fifteen to twenty miles from the stand. Whether patrons are looking to plant flowers, grow their own garden or simply enjoy fresh produce, Tina and her staff educate their customers about the growing season and fresh, local produce.
“We always promote all local products and give our customers knowledge of how to manage their plants,” commented Ms. Hill. “Whether it is tomatoes or bedding plants we want to make sure that our customers have all the information they need.”
Hill’s Fresh Plant and Produce offers over 50 different herbs and 75 different vegetable plants starting in April. Buyers can choose from purchasing plants for growing their own garden early in the season or purchase fruits and vegetables later in the season that are fresh and ready for consumption. Starting in April, Hill’s provides monthly favorites like asparagus and strawberries during spring months and sweet corn, apples and tomatoes during the summer months. The complete list of Hill’s produce and the month each item is expected to be available can be seen on www.hillsfresh.net.
Hill’s Plant and Produce Market will be opening for the season on Friday, March 30 and be open 6 days a week; Monday through Friday from 10am to 6pm and Saturday 9am to 6pm.
