On Thursday, March 8th, 2012, The Milford-Slaughtneck Youth Chapter of the NAACP sponsored a Spaghetti Dinner & Social at Mt. Enon Church in Milford. Around 50 people attended and the purpose of this event was to introduce to the community the re-organized youth chapter as well as bring awareness and focus on youth membership and education.

The program included the spaghetti dinner along with several presentations: Rico Stratton Bey Jr. performed a gospel mime act and Tara Christopher performed a praise dance. The Guest Speaker for the event was Mr. Joe Brake Jr., Middle School Outreach Coordinator for the University of Delaware, who discussed the importance of a postsecondary education and the University of Delaware Commitment to Delawareans Initiative.

The Initiative’s goal is to prepare students for admission to the University of Delaware, and it includes academic, financial and rolling admission components. The UD Commitment to Delawareans is an academic roadmap that shows students and parents the coursework that must be completed and performance that must be achieved in courses to be confident of gaining admission onto the Newark campus of the University of Delaware. For additional information on the Commitment to Delawareans visit www.udel.edu/commitment and for more information on the Youth Chapter, contact the President, Julian Brown at (302) 312-8431 or the Adult Advisor, Merlyn Brown at (302) 393-7741.
