Paddles, Pollywogs & Panfish Event Highlights Great Outdoors

Sam Day teaching chidden to fish at Abbott's Mill Pond

Abbott’s Mill and Sam’s Fishing Tackle shop have partnered in an effort to bring children and the community at large out to the Abbott’s Mill Nature Center on Saturday, June 16 to enjoy a children’s fishing tournament, nature show and live entertainment. Started 6 years ago as a way to encourage outdoor recreation and appreciation of our community’s natural beauty, Paddles, Pollywogs & Panfish will give local children the opportunity to enjoy one of Delaware’s natural landmarks.

“The event is all about family time,” commented Sam’s Fishing Tackle owner Sam Day. “Our lifestyles are so busy now that many times we put work first and family second. Paddles, Pollywogs & Panfish will give mom and dad a chance to slow down a share time with their children outdoors.”

Located in a charming, rural setting in southern Delaware, Abbott’s Mill Nature Center is a real hidden jewel to the Milford community. As the weather warms up the opportunities for outdoor recreation are abundant on and around Abbott’s Pond. Hiking, canoeing, fishing and bird watching are just a few activities that can be enjoyed right here in our backyard.

Abbott’s Mill Nature Center, with its preserved, working mill, is owned by Delaware’s Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs and operated by the Delaware Nature Society. Located along Abbott’s Pond just southwest of Milford, the Nature Center manages 313 acres. This diverse nature preserve supports a variety of forested, field and wetland habitats and includes hiking trails, boardwalks and teaching stations that provide educational opportunities for all ages.

The Paddles, Pollywogs & Panfish event on Saturday, June 16 will highlight the diverse recreational activities that are available at Abbott’s Mill and aim to spark the interest of nature’s beauty with a children’s fishing tournament. Participants are encouraged to bring their own rods and reels while bait will be provided for competitors. The competition will be held from 9am to 1pm with ages 2-15 entered for free. The tournament will be catch and release and each fish will be weighed to judge the winners.

The event will also host a reptile and amphibian show, live entertainment and a chance to explore Abbott’s Mill Nature Center. The first 100 children to sign up for the event will receive free gift bags that include special items from the 17 sponsors involved.
