Relay For Life of Milford This Week

The American Cancer Society, the nation’s leading voluntary health organization, will hold its 13th annual Relay For Life event at Milford, Middle School Track, beginning on June 15th 6pm and ending on June 16th 6am.

“We have 32 teams this year and we hope to raise over $115,000” said event chair Lorna Petchey .

Relay For Life is a 12-hour event that brings together teams from local businesses, schools, churches and families for fun, food, music, entertainment and a night under the stars, while team members take turns walking on the track. Relay For Life begins with a Cancer Survivors reception and lap to celebrate life. The monies raised from this event will go toward the American Cancer Society’s research, education, advocacy and patient service programs.

One of the many highlights of the event is the Luminaria Ceremony, which begins at 9pm. During the event, from 6pm to 8pm people may purchase a luminaria in memory or in honor of someone who has been touched by cancer. The luminaria bags are placed around the track and lit during a memorial program starting at 9pm.

This year local men will join fight against cancer wearing tiaras and sashes, as Relay hosts its very first MissTER Relay, the contest is a fun way to raise money for the fight against cancer. “Men in the community participate in pageant events that include an evening gown and a competition question. Each contestant will be issued a donation bucket and will walk the track collecting vote donations. The winner will be the one with the most vote donations and highest score issued by an independent panel of judges.

There will be a lots of wonderful fun kids entertainment this year starting at 6pm, with moon bounces, clowns, pony rides, puppets show, games, crafts and contests. The teams will have even more food, entertainment and crafts available to keep the whole family happy all night.

“I encourage everyone to come out to the event to cheer on cancer survivors during the Opening Ceremony and to remember everyone touched by cancer during the Luminaria Ceremony at dusk,” said Cancer Action Network Advocate Cindy Canevari. “We invite all local cancer survivors, family and friends to attend.”
