The Milford Senior League Softball team was crowned District I Champions on Thursday night after defeating Marydel Hartley and Dover during last week’s tournament. During the District Tournament the girls outscored their opponents 25-4, dominating the plate and also the defensive side of the ball.

On Tuesday, July 10 the Milford senior girls defeated Marydel Hartley 5-0 in the winners bracket final. The combined pitching from Haylee Scruggs and Brea MacFarland, with 5 strike outs and only 3 hits, allowed Milford to defeat Marydel and earned them their third consecutive shutout performance in the District Tournament.

“We have a lot of depth on the team and several strong pitchers,” commented Coach Ernie Scruggs. “We have five great pitchers on the team even though we have only used two until this point”

During Tuesday’s game, Emily Messick scored the first run of the night in the 2nd inning on an RBI sacrifice bunt by Brea MacFarland. Harley Rickards  brought in the second run in the 2nd inning on a base hit by Jasmine Passwaters. Haylee Scruggs & Kasey Fry both scored a run on RBI’s by Jasmine Passwaters as well. Another combined pitching performance from Haylee Scruggs and Brea MacFarland allowed the only 4 runs to come across the plate against Milford during the entire district tournament. Scruggs pitched the first 4 innings allowing one run in the top of the 4th as MacFarland, pitching inning 5 through 7, allowed 3 runs in the 6th.

Jenna Campbell came into the game with a double scoring Rickards and Brea MacFarland hit a double scoring Campbell. During the tournament the girls put up 25 runs against their opponents.

“A lot of the teams do not have a lot of depth in their hitting and you know if you can get through the first couple batters you will be fine,” commented Coach Kevin MacFarland. “But with our girls you need to get through the entire lineup to have a chance to win.”

Milford advances to the State Tournament which will begin on Saturday, July 21in Dover at Shutte park. They will face District II Champions Stanton New Port in the opening round. Pitchers Haylee Scruggs and Brea MacFarland are slated to perform in the first round of the State Tournament.

“I continue to tell the girls that the competition is going to get tougher as they move up,” commented Manager Ronnie Fry. “We just need to keep working on hitting through the ball and playing how we have been playing.

Last year, the Milford All Star team won the District and State Title for the Junior League Division and they look to repeat their success as they compete at the Senior League level. If the Milford Senior League girls win the State Tournament they will be headed to Worcester, Massachusetts to play for the Regional Title.
