Milford natives, Paul and Robbie Rescigno are producing their original musical comedy variety show The Rescignos at the American Theater of Actors 3in New York City, September 19-29 as a part of the second annual Araca Project.
Robbie and Paul Rescigno both graduated from Milford Senior High School in 2002 and attended Syracuse University where they each received degrees in acting. Now they are living and working in New York City while performing their own cabaret theatre. During their freshman year of college the twins were encouraged by Jerry Thompson, former Band Director at the Milford High School, to begin their own show. It was that suggestion that inspired Robbie and Paul to continually develop a show during their tenure in college. They kept notes and drafts as they waited for their chance to bring it to life.
The Rescignos had its first performance in 2006 at Syracuse University. Since then, Paul and Robbie have been developing the show, and in the past three years they have performed regularly to sold-out crowds in New York City’s cabaret rooms, winning both the 2011 Nightlife Award and the 2011 Bistro?Award. The Off-Broadway run of The Rescignos in September will feature the show’s signature original music and song parodies performed by Robbie and Paul, leading an ensemble of 8 actors including their sister and fellow Milfordian, Tricia Rescigno.
The Rescignos is one of six productions selected out of 90 applicants for the second annual Araca Project, an initiative of The Araca Group (Broadway producers of Wicked, Rock of Ages, Urinetown). The Araca Project joins Syracuse University and the University of Michigan in The Araca Group’s commitment to early career development and fostering the entrepreneurial spirit in emerging artists.
As participants in the project, Robbie and Paul, along with producer Mike Hadge, take on the full artistic and fiscal responsibilities of producing their work Off-Broadway. To kick-off their fundraising campaign, the team held a special “telethon” show in June, featuring another Milford native, Erin Williams. Since then, they have launched an online fundraising campaign that has already raised over five thousand dollars.
“We have had so much fun in the last few years working with our team and developing the show. We could not be more excited to bring it to an Off-Broadway theater in the fall. We’re ecstatic. This is huge.” Robbie said. Paul added, “I’m going to need to buy a new sweater vest.”
