Junior League Baseball Wins State Champions


The Milford Junior League Baseball team was crowned 2012 Delaware State Champions on Sunday, July 29 with their 2-1 win over Canal Little League. They will now advance to the Eastern Regional Tournament in Freehold Township, New Jersey to play for the Regional Title.

The Milford Junior Baseball team won the title of District I Champions to advance to the State Tournament on Thursday, July 12 after defeating MOT (Middletown, Odessa, Townsend) 7-2. The boys have gone undefeated in both the District and State Tournament outscoring their opponents 70-22; 40-14 in the District Tournament and 30-8 in the State Tournament.

In the opening round of the State Tournament, held on Wednesday, July 25, Milford defeated their opponent Canal Little League 14-1. Dustin Reeder, who became a strong force on both sides of the ball throughout the State Tournament, began the game with a perfect performance, allowing zero hits in the first 3 innings. He was relieved by Holden Bailey and Tyler Benton on the mound that allowed only 3 hits before the game was called in 5 innings via the slaughter rule.

Offensive leaders in Wednesday’s game included pitcher Dustin Reeder with 4 runs, Derrick Brooks with 3 runs and Tommy Jordan with 2 runs scored. Tyler Benton had 2 RBIs and Brady Carter had 2 hits.

“Our offense was just outstanding,” commented Coach Kevin Mitchell. “Pitcher Dustin Reeder was dead on with his pitching and had a strong performance at the plate.”

Milford celebrates their State Championship Title after Sunday’s win against Canal

In the second round of the State Tournament on Thursday, July 26, Milford defeated Millsboro 14-6. Starting out slow, Milford lost their lead to Millsboro 4-6 through the 5 innings of play. One inning later the bats came alive as Milford scored a combined 10 runs in the 6th and 7th inning. Tyler Benton received the win for the game, pitching through the first 5 innings, and had 3 RBIs. Benton was relieved by Holden Bailey in the 6th, who was then relieved by Tommy Jordan in the 7th inning.

“We are deep in pitching,” commented Coach Mitchell. “We have had a great tournament play because we have had so many guys available to pitch.”

The pitching rotation for Milford was dominant on the mound but demonstrated their athleticism by having great performances behind the plate as well. In Thursday’s night game pitchers Tommy Jordan, Dustin Reeder and Tyler Benton each scored 2 runs. Derrick Brooks scored 3 runs while Mike Saxton scored 2 runs.

The State Championship game on Saturday, July 28 saw Milford face off against Canal Little League for the second time in the State Tournament. After 4 1/2 innings the game on Saturday was called due to severe thunderstorms in the immediate area. As the game resumed on Sunday, Canal began with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the 4th inning. Pitcher Tommy Jordan allowed 1 RBI walk that tied the game 1-1, but was able to end the inning with a fly out. In the bottom of the seventh inning, pitcher Korey Mitchell hit an RBI double to bring home Tyler Benton and set up the 2-1 victory. In the bottom of the seventh inning Mitchell continued his star performance as he closed out the game on the mound with a full count strikeout, claiming the title of State Champions for Milford.

“Our team is just one big family with everyone pulling for everyone,” commented Coach Kevin Mitchell. “No one gave up; it was such an outstanding game.”

Milford will now advance to the Eastern Regional Tournament in Freehold Township, New Jersey. The tournament will kick-off with a Champion Recognition Banquet for the teams and guests on Friday, August 3 with the opening ceremony and parade of teams held on Saturday, August 4.
