Retzlaff In Critical Condition After Crash

UPDATE: Dr. Heinz Retzlaff passed away Thursday, October 4th, from injuries sustained in the car crash.

Superintendent Phyllis Kohel passed along the condolences of the Milford School District. “Dr. Heinz Retzlaff worked in the Milford School District for approximately 12 years,” said Dr. Kohel. “During his time in the district, he served in a number of capacities including Director of Operations, Supervisor of student accountability, Supervisor of Transportation, and Milford Middle School principal and assistant principal. He was a man with a wealth of knowledge and talent, and we will certainly miss him.”

ORIGINAL STORY:

The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing their investigation into a single vehicle crash that occurred on Shawnee Road just east of Utica Road near Greenwood involving Heinz A. Retzlaff. Dr. Retzlaff is the Director of Operations for the MIlford School District.

According to police, the incident occurred at approximately 11:09 a.m. on October 1st as Heinz A. Retzlaff was operating a 2011 Honda Accord eastbound on Shawnee Road just east of Utica Road.  Police state that for unknown reasons, Retzlaff left the south side of the roadway before striking a tree with the front left of the Accord.

The Delaware State Police state that Heinz Retzlaff, who was not properly restrained, was removed from the scene by EMS and then airlifted by LifeNet Helicopter to Christiana Hospital where he is listed in critical condition. Shawnee Road in the area of Utica Road was closed for approximately three and a half hours as the crash was investigated and cleared.
