Olympia Sports Open in Milford

Opening their doors on Tuesday, November 20, Olympia Sports held their Grand Opening in the Plaza at Milford on North Dupont Highway over the Black Friday weekend. Currently undergoing a $4 million renovation, The Plaza has been able to attract several new businesses including this new exclusive sports apparel and equipment store.

The privately-owned sporting goods store features a broad assessment of name brand merchandise in sports equipment, athletic footwear and accessories. Founded in 1974 in South Portland, Maine, Olympia Sports now has over 240 stores in the Mid-Atlantic Region. With the Milford store being the first Olympia Sports in Delaware, associates at the company are excited to see their newest location strive and hope to serve the sports needs of the local community.

“We looked at several locations in Delaware and chose Milford because we felt we could become a store that is involved with the local sports community,” commented Mr. Whitehouse, Olympia Sports District Manager. “We have already received some feedback from our customers and they have told us they are pleased to have a local sports store that they do not have to travel far to.”

District Manager Jim Whitehouse, who has been with the company for 13 years, states that Olympia Sports’ focus on the local sports community is what makes them different than other sporting good stores. He points to their Team Discount Program, where the store offers discounts on necessities such as cleats and other equipment, as an example of their outreach to local sports program. They are also involved with charities including the United Way, Special Olympics, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Children’s Hospital and The Jimmy Fund.

Shannon Dixon, who has been with company since July, is the Store Manager of the Milford location. Moving from New York where she previously worked as an Olympia Sports employee, she now manages 12 employees at the Milford location. She states that in the first two weeks the traffic to the store has been heavy.

“So far it has been very good as people are coming in to check us out,” stated Dixon. “We carry all of the name brand and regional teams clothing and equipment for sports including baseball, field hockey, basketball and football. ”

The Olympia Sports in Milford, located at 644 North Dupont Boulevard, is open Monday through Saturday 10 to 9pm and Sunday 10-6pm. The store can be reached by calling 302-422-8366 or visiting www.olympiasports.net.

“We want to do all we can to make the Milford store a success,” commented Whitehouse. “We look forward to working with the local teams to meet their needs.”
