The 56th Annual Milford Memorial Hospital Fair is ushering in “A New Era” with a full slate of activities on May 17 and 18 on the Milford Middle School grounds. This year’s Fair Committee has been hard at work planning exciting activities and events for the community to enjoy both days. Each year, the Milford Memorial Hospital Auxiliary sponsors the Fair to raise money to fund vital programs and purchase lifesaving equipment for Milford Memorial Hospital. Net proceeds from this year’s Fair will be used towards the development and construction of the new hospital on the Bayhealth Milford Memorial campus.

In an attempt to meet the growing needs for space to accommodate new and existing services, Bayhealth will continue to make infrastructure improvements to Milford Memorial Hospital while the planning for the replacement hospital continues. Construction of the new replacement hospital is expected to begin in 2014 and is estimated to take approximately two years to reach completion. Building the replacement hospital on the current campus will eliminate the need to acquire new land and allow the project to be developed in phases.

The Hospital Fair was started in1958 by Mrs. Raymond (Edith) Masten and Mrs. Leslie (Mardy) Dobson in the small field located in the area behind (north side) the hospital that faced along Clarke Ave. It was a very localized fundraising effort to purchase some special equipment for the hospital that was not available in the normal budget. The original location is now the site of the latest entrance wing of the hospital and the medical-arts offices that were later donated by the estate of Wilson S. Vinyard in 1973.

Kicking off this year’s Hospital Fair, the Milford Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and Tri-Sports Events are sponsoring a 5K Run/Walk & Kiddie K Dash on Friday, May 17, at Milford Middle School, 612 Lakeview Road in Milford. Registration opens at 5:30 pm., with the race set to begin at 6:30 pm. Custom awards will be given for overall male and female, masters categories, top three winners in age group categories 14 and under through 70 and over. For the 5K walk, awards will be presented to the top three male and female walkers. The award ceremony will take place following the completion of the event.

Registration will be $20 until May 10, and will increase to $25 after May 10 up through the day of the event, the Kiddie K Dash is free. MMH Hospital Fair 5K t-shirts, and free food and beverage are guaranteed to all race/walk participants. If individuals cannot walk or run but still would like to be a part of the 5K, they may be a silent hero and still donate. Guests who are not participating with the 5K are also encouraged to attend and enjoy a delicious dinner for a small nominal fee. In addition to race activities, there will also be entertainment, food and vendors. All funds raised during this event will be donated to the new hospital replacement facility.
On Saturday, May 18, all the regular favorites from the Hospital Fair will be there, including flowers, books, games, rides, face painting, petting zoo, entertainment, inflatables and prizes. All the famous fair food will return as well, such as scrapple sandwiches, lemon sticks, chicken platters, crabcake sandwiches, french fries, burgers and hotdogs. Milford Memorial staff members will be on hand to provide free screenings for osteoporosis, blood pressure, and face, for sun damage. Many crafters and vendors will offer handcrafted and gift items for sale, as well as many other booths representing community services.

Continuing in the tradition of raising money to fund vital programs and purchase lifesaving equipment for Bayhealth Milford Memorial, the Milford Memorial Hospital Auxiliary will donate this year’s net proceeds to new replacement hospital to be located on the Milford Memorial Hospital campus.
