Milford High School junior Shadiya Lowery has been working hard in the throwing circle as a major asset to the MHS track and field program with strong performances in the field events of shot put and discus. Lowery recently broke her personal records in both events.
Lowery’s fourth-place toss of 31 feet, 3 inches at the Twilight Relays at Caravel on April 19 locked her spot in this year’s state meet competition. She also scored a career-best and provisional state qualifier of 84 feet, 1 inch in discus at the meet.
“I felt so accomplished,” said Lowery. “I’ve been working all season to make states, and I’ve finally done it.”
Lowery has been working in the weight room to prepare for the state competition, and she also has practiced with the boys` shots, which are heavier, to increase her throwing distance. She also wants to perfect the glide technique and help her to her season goal of 33 feet.
“I want to be the best I can,” said Lowery confidently. “You can expect me to place in states.” Lowery remains ready for competition. She advanced to the state meet this winter and last spring with provisional standards.
“Lowery has really become an experienced veteran thrower for us and gets the team a lot of points,” says head coach Czar Bloom.
