Milford Memorial Opens Lactation Room

Bayhealth Medical Center

Just in time for World Breastfeeding Awareness Week, Bayhealth Milford Memorial has opened a new lactation room available to all nursing mothers.

The new room allows employees who are nursing to either breastfeed their baby or have a private area to pump during their break. This special room meets requirements of the Fair Labor Standards Act and the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and demonstrates Bayhealth’s commitment to providing an environment that acknowledges the importance of breastfeeding for mothers and their children. The facility continues to lead the way by demonstrating a superb commitment to its employees who breastfeed

“This room is important for many reasons, the most important of all being that breast milk is best for babies,” said Bayhealth Lactation Services Program Coordinator Gail Smith, RN, IBCLC. “Breastfeeding mothers are healthier, and have a decreased risk of developing certain cancers and other disorders. It also saves money and provides savings on health care costs and work time lost to care for sick children.

The theme of this year’s World Breastfeeding Week, held from August 1 – 7, 2013, is “Breastfeeding Support: Close to Mothers,” which is indicative of the support Bayhealth shows its employees who are breastfeeding. In the weeks or months after delivery, breastfeeding rates sharply decline, and support for mothers who wish to continue breastfeeding is crucial.

Support is available at Bayhealth, where Lactation Services are available to the community. Bayhealth offers education classes before and after the birth of the baby and support groups that meet twice a month. Moms and babies of all breastfeeding ages attend. Out-patient consults are also available by phone or office visit. For more information on classes or to speak to a lactation consultant, please call 744-7233.
