The Delaware State Police are asking the public’s assistance in locating a Milford man wanted for seriously assaulting a trooper after he committed a burglary and fled. The incident occurred on Sunday August 11, 2013 around 4:56 a.m. as troopers were dispatched to Hertrich Nissan located at 1378 South DuPont Highway for a burglary alarm.  Police state that as the 26 year old female trooper entered the parking lot, she observed a dark colored Honda Accord attempting to depart the business through the north exit.  According to police, the trooper began to exit her vehicle in an attempt to make contact with the operator, when the car continued to drive directly at her striking the driver’s side door and pinning the trooper’s left foot in between the door and the frame.  The suspect, who was later identified as Darrell R. Putnam, 26 of Milford, continued driving recklessly in the parking lot striking two more automobiles before fleeing the area.  Registration information was obtained by troopers and Putnam was established as a suspect.

DSP states that investigation by troopers revealed Putnam had entered the business through a window and removed a safe which he placed in the passenger’s side of his vehicle.  As he was fleeing the parking lot, the safe fell out of the passenger’s side door and onto the ground.

The trooper was transported to Kent General Hospital where she was treated for a fractured left foot.
