imagesThe Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a crash involving a State Police vehicle that occurred early this morning.

According to police, preliminary investigation indicates the trooper was traveling southbound in the far left lane on Coastal Highway (SR1) in a 2008 fully marked Ford Crown Victoria. At the same time, Kathleen A. Jester was operating a 2010 Chevrolet Aveo southeast on the newly constructed SR30 exit ramp onto southbound SR1. Police state that instead of remaining within the curvature of the painted exit ramp lane markings, Jester made an abrupt left lane change from the exit ramp, crossing both southbound travel lanes in an attempt to ‘short cut’ to the median crossover at Lady Slipper Lane. In doing so, she failed to observe the approaching patrol vehicle and the front of the Aveo struck the right passenger’s side of patrol car within the left travel lane. This caused the police cruiser to spin clockwise into the grass median, coming to stop facing in a northerly direction. The Cheverolet Aveo also spun clockwise, coming to stop in the left southbound lane, facing in a northerly direction.

Kathleen Jester, who was properly restrained, was removed from the scene by EMS and transported to Milford Memorial Hospital where she was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. She was cited for Improper Lane Change. The 35 year old trooper, who was properly restrained, was not injured. The Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing their investigation into this incident. SR1 southbound between South Rehoboth Boulevard and Johnson Road was closed for approximately three hours as the crash investigated and cleared.
