With a new coach this year, the Milford Buccaneers swim teams’ season is shaping up to be a transitional season. As coach Ellen Gorrin takes the reigns for the Bucs, this season will be a learning experience for all involved.

Talking with Gorrin about taking charge of the program, she says that this is a job she has wanted for a very long time, going back to the very beginnings of Milford swimming. “I was actually a member of the very first swim team Milford had,” Gorrin commented. “I started swimming in my junior year of high school, and coaching is something I always wanted to do.”

While the number of swimmers on this year’s squad may be down a bit, Gorrin believes that they have some swimmers that can be productive. “We have a fairly deep and versatile lineup, and we have a good group of swimmers that can do a little bit of everything,” stated Gorrin.

One of a the first jobs that any new coach must do is getting to know the character of their team. While it’s early in the year, Gorrin has been pleased with what she has seen so far “The kids have really kept me on my toes so far, they are always doing something to impress me.” Gorrin added “They have a very positive attitude and willing to work very hard.”

As with any team, Milford needs swimmers to step up and provide leadership. On the boys side junior Dustin Reeder has been solid, in just his second year swimming. “Dustin is a very hard worker and is very committed to improving,” Gorrin said. On the girls side there are a few Buccaneers that have demonstrated solid potential. “Ally Sanders, Sarah Lingo and Leigh Ann Rossetti have all been doing great work this season,” added Gorrin.

One of the goals that Milford has for the season is to qualify swimmers for the State meet. On the boys side Reeder, who also plays baseball, is hoping to achieve that goal. “I was a second off on my qualifying time last season, so I got to travel north as an alternate,” Reeder commented. “Getting a chance to see what the State meet is all about, it is driving me that much harder to qualify.” Reeder said that the team has really embraced coach Gorrin. “Coach Ellen is real great to work for, she really cares about all of us,” stated Reeder. “This team has a real family feel to it, and she is a big part of that.”

Talking with senior Ally Sanders, who qualified for last year’s State meet, she likes swimming for coach Gorrin. “She makes us work hard, but she also makes it a lot of fun, and that’s important.” Sanders has been a State qualifier all four year, and looks forward to making it to the State meet again this season. “Qualifying for the State’s is always a goal, and it’s no different this year.”
