Bayhealth Welcomes Ob Hospitalist Group

In January Bayhealth Milford Memorial introduced the Ob Hospitalist Group, which makes hospital-based doctors available to all expectant mothers arriving in Labor and Delivery. To support this initiative, Bayhealth is working with Ob Hospitalist Group, the nation’s largest dedicated OB/GYN hospitalist provider.

“Hospitalist” is the general term for physicians who specialize in caring for hospitalized patients. The Ob Hospitalist Program at Bayhealth Milford Memorial provides 24/7/365 on-site hospitalist services for obstetrics and gynecology.

“While many obstetricians divide their time between their office and the hospital, this program features hospital-based doctors focused solely on providing care to patients in the labor and delivery unit, as well as those facing emergency situations,” said Bayhealth Director for Women’s and Children’s Services Veronica Kopec, RN, MS, NE-BC. “These doctors will provide enhanced coverage and a critical safety net to OB/GYNs in our community.”

When expectant mothers arrive at Labor and Delivery, the OB/GYN hospitalist will coordinate care with the patient’s primary physician, evaluate the progress of the patient’s labor, review test results and fetal heart rate tracings and ensure a safe delivery for the expectant mother and her baby. Hospitalist care is a growing trend nationwide that helps increase access to specialists and improves patient outcomes. This program will make Bayhealth Milford Memorial the only hospital in Delaware to offer OB/GYN hospitalist care.

The Ob Hospitalist team providing services at Bayhealth Milford Memorial includes John Deaver, MD, MS; Fredericka Heller, MD, FACOG; Walter Kobasa Jr., MD; Michael Meyer, DO; and Michael Schiavone II, MD, FACOG.

Dr. Deaver is a Diplomate of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. After receiving his medical degree from the University of Iowa College of Medicine, he completed his internship at University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, his residency at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center and his fellowship at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University.

Board-certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dr. Heller received her medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School and completed her residency at Reading Hospital & Medical Center.

Dr. Kobasa received his medical degree from St. Georges School of Medicine. He completed his internship at Greater Baltimore Medical Center and residencies at Polyclinic Medical Center and Geisinger Medical Center. He is board-certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Dr. Meyer received his medical degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. Board-certified by the American Board of Osteopathic Obstetrics and Gynecology, he completed his internship at Lancaster Osteopathic Hospital and his residency at Community Hospital of Lancaster.

After receiving his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Dr. Schiavone completed his residency at the State University of New York (Children’s Hospital of Buffalo) and his internship at Albert Einstein Medical Center. He is board-certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
