The DuPont Nature Center at Mispillion Harbor Reserve, a DNREC Division of Fish and Wildlife facility located in the heart of Delaware’s Bayshore Region, reopened on Saturday, March 1 after being closed for the winter. Spring hours from March 1 through May 3 will be 10 am to 4 pm Wednesday through Saturday. Beginning May 4 and continuing through August 26, the center also will be open 10 am to 4 pm on Sundays.

Perched on the edge of Mispillion Harbor at the intersection of the mouths of the Mispillion River and Cedar Creek, the DuPont Nature Center at Mispillion Harbor Reserve offers a variety of interactive exhibits, school tours and educational programs. Indoor freshwater tanks allow a close-up look at a variety of aquatic species, from horseshoe crabs to diamondback terrapins.

In the spring, the center’s large deck overlooking the harbor offers wildlife watchers a front-row seat for the spring spectacle of spawning horseshoe crabs and the migrating shorebirds including the red knot that depend on horseshoe crab eggs to help fuel their 9,000-mile journey.

New for 2014, the DuPont Nature Center will be open to schools and organizations, for reserved group tours only, from 9 am to 4 pm on Tuesdays from March 4 through August 26. For more information about educational programs, or to schedule tours and field trips, individuals can call 302-422-1329 or email dawn.webb@state.de.us.

Special events open to the public during the 2014 season include the Earth Day Celebration on Saturday, April 26, the 5th Annual Peace, Love and Horseshoe Crab Festival on Saturday, May 17 and Fish Camp Summer Day Camps on Mondays: June 16, July 14 and August 11.

The DuPont Nature Center is located at 2992 Lighthouse Road, near Slaughter Beach, east of Milford. Admission is free and open to the public. For more information about the center and its programs, individuals are encouraged to call 302-422-1329 or visit www.dupontnaturecenter.org.
