During the Miss Milford Scholarship Pageant on February 22 milford’s own Alyssa Mils was crowned Miss MidState. The Miss Milford Scholarship Organization, which awarded Miss MidState, is a local organization that helps young women in “developing confidence, self-esteem, poise and scholarships. Their focus is similar to the Miss America Organization and is based on the four points of the crown that represent style, service, scholarship and success.

Sue McKinney, Executive Director of the Miss Milford Scholarship Organization, was excited to see the support from the local community and the level of talent the girls displayed. “This is pretty exciting, there is so much family support here,” commented McKinney. “We have some very talented girls here tonight and it is going to be tough to choose just one to represent Milford.”

A graduate of Milford High School in 2013, Alyssa was crowned Miss MidState at the closing of the evening. Mills is currently in her freshman year at Lynchburg College in Virginia, studying Elementary Education. While in high school, Alyssa was very involved as she was a member of the National Honors Society, Vice President of the Leo Club service organization and an outstanding athlete. Mills currently plays for the Lynchburg College Field Hockey team which is known for their success, winning eighth-straight ODAC Titles in the last decade.

Alyssa’s platform is raising health awareness for young women through her involvement with the national organization Girls On The Run. The non-profit is dedicated to “creating a world where every girl knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dreams.”

“I want young women and their families to realize the importance of teaching about healthy lifestyles,” commented Mills. “The possibilities are endless and being healthy and confident will help these girls know they really can do anything.”

A self-described rookie to the pageant scene, Alyssa was crowned Little Miss Milford in 2003 although she has not competed since. “It was really a lot of fun and I was very nervous,” stated Mills. “Everyone was extremely nice and very encouraging.”

Alyssa will serve as Miss MidState for one year and compete for the title of Miss Delaware to be held on Saturday, June 14 at Dover Downs & Casino.

“I am looking forward to the experience,” stated Mills. “I am new at this, I will work hard and do my best to represent the state and the Milford area.”
