1The 57th Annual Milford Memorial Hospital Fair is “Supporting 57 Years of Healthy Living” with a full slate of activities on May 16 and 17 on the grounds of the former Milford Middle School. This year’s Fair Committee has been hard at work planning exciting activities and events for the community to enjoy both days. Each year, the Milford Memorial Hospital Auxiliary sponsors the Fair to raise money to fund vital programs and purchase lifesaving equipment for Milford Memorial Hospital.

Net proceeds from this year’s Fair will be used towards the development and construction of the new Bayhealth Medical Center replacement hospital. In an attempt to meet the growing needs for space to accommodate new and existing services, Bayhealth will continue to make infrastructure improvements to Milford Memorial Hospital while the planning for the replacement hospital continues. After construction of the new replacement hospital begins, it is estimated to take approximately two years to reach completion.

The Hospital Fair was started in1958 by Mrs. Raymond (Edith) Masten and Mrs. Leslie (Mardy) Dobson in the small field located in the area behind (north side) the hospital that faced along Clarke Ave. It was a very localized fundraising effort to purchase some special equipment for the hospital that was not available in the normal budget. The original location is now the site of the latest entrance wing of the hospital and the medical-arts offices that were later donated by the estate of Wilson S. Vinyard in 1973.

Kicking off this year’s Hospital Fair, On Friday, May 16, The Milford Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and Tri-Sports Events are sponsoring a 5K Run/Walk & Kiddie K Dash beginning at Milford Middle School, 612 Lakeview Road. Registration opens at 5:30 pm, with the race set to begin at 6:30 pm. To register, individuals can visit www.trisportsevents.com. Following the race, an awards presentation, D.J., food catered by Burgers and Beans, quarter auction and vendors will be present for all to enjoy. Sign up, includes t-shirt and one free meal, is $20 until May 9, and $25 after that and on the day of the race. The Kiddie K is free. Tickets for the quarter auction are $5 each and can be purchased in the Reflections Gift Shop or by calling Dee Greenlee at 424-0395.

All the regular favorites will be at this year’s Fair, including flowers, books, games, rides, face painting, petting zoo, entertainment, inflatables and prizes. New this year will be a dunking booth. All the famous fair food will return as well, such as scrapple sandwiches, lemon sticks, chicken platters cooked by the Milford Moose Lodge, crabcake sandwiches, french fries, burgers and hotdogs and lemonade. Crafters and vendors will offer handcrafted and gift items for sale, as well as many other booths representing community services.

New to the fair this year is the Healthy Living Expo, which will offer several free screenings: stroke assessment, sleep disturbance risk assessment, cholesterol testing, osteoporosis, blood pressure, and face or sun damage. Many Bayhealth departments will be on hand with information on available programs and services. A children’s activities tent will allow children to decorate get well cards for patients and visit with Bart the Bear.

Continuing in the tradition of raising money to fund vital programs and purchase lifesaving equipment for Bayhealth Milford Memorial, the Milford Memorial Hospital Auxiliary will donate this year’s net proceeds to new replacement hospital to be located on the Milford Memorial Hospital campus.
