Having not taken the field in a week, it would be reasonable to expect that the Milford softball team might be a bit flat. That was indeed the case yesterday as the Bucs traveled to Woodbridge to take on the Blue Raiders. The result was a 8-0 defeat that all but eliminated Milford from any chance of winning the Henlopen South title.

The Milford bats that had been so hot of late, were mostly silent on the day. While a portion of the lack of offense could be contributed to a lack of recent activity, a great deal of credit should go to Blue Raiders pitcher Hailey Andrews. The Woodbridge junior put in a solid performance and got the key outs when she needed them.

After falling behind 4-0 Milford produced their most credible scoring threat in the top of the fourth inning. With runners on second and third and just one out, Andrews bore down and retired the next two batters she faced. “Andrews did a real good job against us today,” Milford coach Drew Holleger commented. “While we may have been a bit off today, that was a very solid performance by a very good pitcher.”

The fourth inning would be the last time that Milford would have a chance to get back into the game. Inning by inning Woodbridge added to their lead, in what would become an 8-0 Woodbridge victory. Talking with Holleger after the game, he was a little disappointed with how the team came out to start the game. “We just didn’t seem to have any intensity today, while we had some spots when it looked as if we would turn it up, we just didn’t get it done.”

The loss dropped Milford’s record to 10-4 (1-2) and all but eliminated the Buccaneers from contention in the Henlopen South race. Milford has four games left in the season and will be looking to right the ship starting Tuesday night at 7pm. The game is being held at the little league complex under the lights, as Milford hosts Lake Forest.

The final three games of the year will be against some very highly regarded teams. Milford will host 10-2 Sussex Tech on Friday at 4:15 pm, before they travel to 10-1 Laurel next Tuesday for another 4:15 start. The Buccaneers will wrap up the regular season with a road trip to Indian River next Thursday. While the schedule is challenging, Holleger believes that his team will be up for the task. “I have very little doubt that the girls will bounce back from today’s loss and get back to playing solid ball.” he stated.
