Director Curtis Howard has announced that auditions for Second Street Players Fall 2014 Production of Sweeney Todd  will be held on Saturday, June 14 through Monday, June 16. Sweeney Todd has found success as a musical stage thriller around the world since being awarded eight Tonys, one of them for Best Musical, for its Broadway premiere. Adapted to film by Tim Burton with Johnny Depp in the title role, Sweeney has slashed his way across entertainment mediums.

An infamous tale, Sweeney Todd, an unjustly exiled barber, returns to 19th century London seeking vengeance against the lecherous judge who framed him and ravaged his young wife. The road to revenge leads Todd to Mrs. Lovett, a resourceful proprietress of a failing pie shop, above which he opens a new barber practice. Mrs. Lovett’s luck sharply shifts when Todd’s thirst for blood inspires the integration of an ingredient into her meat pies that has the people of London lining up. Composer Stephen Sondheim and librettist Hugh Wheeler have crafted a thrilling, theatrical treat that has simultaneously shocked and delighted audiences across the world.

There will be closed audition sessions for the Second Street Players’ adaption of Sweeney Todd on Saturday, June 14 and Sunday, June 15 while an open audition session will be held on Monday. For the closed auditions, actors and actresses interested in auditioning must email Curtis Howard at curtis_sweeneytodd@aol.com with times that they are available.

The time slots will be in 10 minute increments, and will begin at 8am on the 14th and stop at 6pm with an hour lunch from noon to 1pm.  On the 15th the auditions will start at 1pm and end at 9pm.  Second Street Players asks that individuals auditioning for roles to arrive 10-15 minutes early so that actors can prepare and be ready for the scheduled time. On Monday, June 16 the organization will hold open auditions beginning at 7:30pm. Actors should arrive at 7pm to fill out the audition form and to prepare if needed. Auditions will be held at SSP’s Riverfront Theatre on the Saturday, June 14 and Sunday, June 15. The location for auditions on the Monday, June 16th is the Reformation Lutheran Church, 613 Lakeview Avenue in Milford.

Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script. Actors will be asked to sing a selection to showcase their vocal talent. While not required, individuals are encouraged to sing a selection from the Sondheim catalog. Soloists may sing a capella, however the use of musical background tracks is permitted. A keyboard will be available, but vocalists must provide their own accompanist.

There will be nine performances of Sweeney Todd at the Riverfront Theatre over three weekends including September 19 through 21, September 26 through 28 and October 3 through 5. Anyone cast in a role for the show must be available for every performance as well as for technical rehearsals held during the week prior to opening night.
