Staff Report

U.S. Sen. Tom Carper joined volunteers at the Food Bank of Delaware to pack lunches for Delaware’s Summer Food Service Program. Funded by the United States Department of Agriculture and administered by the Delaware Department of Education, this program feeds low-income children so they can continue to receive nutritious meals when school is not in session. Free meals that meet federal nutrition guidelines are provided to all children, 18 years old and under, at various sites up and down the state.

“Summer is a critical time for children who may otherwise go hungry since school is not in session,” Sen. Carper said. “By providing these meals, we can help ensure children are getting healthy, nutritious options to help them continue to learn and grow over the summer.”

In Delaware, there are 28 participating sponsors in this program, like the Food Bank of Delaware, and 374 sites in Delaware where families can receive lunches for their children. Last year, approximately $2 million was spent on the Summer Food Program in Delaware.
