3Staff Report

Christopher Fox of Milford’s Boy Scouts of America (BSA) Troop 116 has achieved the honor of Eagle Scout, the highest honor in the BSA organization. The Eagle Scout Award is the pinnacle of the scouting efforts for many years of dedication and hard work. While earning at least 21 merit badges, the scout must exemplify the responsibilities of honor, loyalty, courage, cheerfulness and service.

Christopher started his scouting career in September of 2002 as a Tiger Scout with Pack 116. Following his tiger scout Christopher began climbing the ranks of Cub Scouting beginning with his Bobcat, Wolf, Bear, and Webelos and on April 10, 2007, Christopher earned the highest rank in Cub Scouting the Arrow of the Light Award. While going through the ranks of his Cub Scouting, Christopher’s camping experience began at Camp Henson in Sharptown, MD. Chris also participated in Day Summer Camps throughout his Cub Scouting career and in several Pine Wood Derby Races.

Christopher crossed over from his Cub Scout Pack 116 to begin his new career as a Boy Scout with Troop 186 sponsored by the Avenue United Methodist Church in Milford where his first Scout Master was Mr. Ron Paine. Once in Boy Scouts, Christopher earned the rank of Tender Foot in 2007. In 2008, he became a Second Class Scout followed up with earning his First Class Scout ranking. In October of 2008, Christopher transferred from Troop 186 to Troop 116 sponsored by the Calvary United Methodist Church, where he received his Star Scout award on February 3, 2010 and his Life Scout award on October 23, 2010.

Upon successfully completing his Life Scout, Christopher could begin thinking about his Eagle project. Chris chose to paint the Grier Banquet Hall at the Carlisle Fire Company. Embarking in this project, Christopher had to appear before the Fire Company’s Board of Director by doing a presentation of his proposed project seeking their permission for him to proceed. Christopher assured the Board Member’s that the entire project would be no cost to the Fire Company. The Board unanimously voted to endorse Christopher’s project.

Following his presentation to the Fire Company, Christopher met with Mr. Sean Gooden a professional commercial painter, who explained to him what materials needed to do the job as well as the cost to perform the project. Following his meeting with Mr. Gooden, Christopher began composing and sending out letters requesting donations for his project. When Chris met with the manager of the local Sherwin-Williams store, Chris Nielson, Nielson explained to Christopher in order for the paint to stick to the walls he would need to sand the surfaces he intended to paint.

On Sunday, July 8, 2012 Christopher and his crew met at the fire hall and began sanding the walls as well as taping around the doors and the bottom half of the walls. Returning the following evening Christopher began instructing his crews their painting assignments and continued overseeing the project to its completion later in the evening. From 6 to10 pm Christopher oversaw and witnessed the transformation from a dingy yellow to freshly painted beige walls in the banquet hall.

Conception of his project, presentation to the fire company Board of Directors, meeting various businesses for supplies and other monetary considerations and enlisting much needed help, resulted in over 150 hours Christopher had dedicated to this project.
