By Stephen Hunter

As 2015 quickly approaches, i.g. Burton and Company is looking to start its 107th year in business. i.g. Burton is one of the oldest automobile dealerships in the United States. The National Automobile Dealership Association, commonly referred to as NADA, honored the company by giving them the “Century Award” for having been in the transportation business more than 100 years. That award is on the long list of awards that they have received from vehicle manufacturers, community organizations, the State of Delaware and several local non-profit organizations.

What has made i.g. Burton and Company so successful for such a long period is the people, as owner Charlie Burton is quick to point out. “People make the big difference. We can have all of the cars, trucks and SUVs on our lots that we want to but if we don’t have excellent people to take care of our customers, nothing will happen,” commented Burton. “Our people set the tone of our business.”

The company has an operations management team consisting of four people, one of which is the owner. “The other 3 people on my team are George Schifferer who has been with our company over 30 years, Pete Renzi who has been with us for almost 20, and M.J. Lofland who has been with us for around 15 years,” said Burton. The company is set up this way in order to give anyone easy access to people who have the authority to make any decision needed. “We are totally transparent. If you speak with any of these gentleman, it is the same as speaking to me. They are here to help resolve any issue, at any level, on any day, at any time. They have the authority to do what needs to be done because we want happy customers. There is nothing worse than having to wait on an answer. We try to avoid that.”

The company even goes as far as giving a card to all of its customers that has the contact information for each member of the team. “We include our email, our cell phones, everything in order for us to be easily reached. We want to hear from people because we want them to be 100% satisfied at all times with i.g. Burton,” stated Burton. “If they are satisfied, we are satisfied. If they are not, we want to hear about it.”

Knowing that people make the difference, i.g. Burton is always seeking new employees. Currently there are openings in in a variety of positions. Experience is preferred, but certainly not necessary. “We want the best people we can find. So we always have a job opening somewhere,” Burton said. “Our company will find a way to hire the right person everyday whether someone has experience or not. Attitude is the key. We want people with a great attitude. Good attitudes are why we have so many long-term employees. Not a lot of companies can say that.”

i.g. Burton & Co., Inc. was founded in 1908. They have locations in Milford and Seaford, Delaware and feature Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and pre-owned vehicles. A complete list of job positions available can be found at www.igburton.com.
