Milford Rotary To Celebrate Emory

5This year Milford Rotary Club’s Evening of Friendship is honoring Gary L. Emory.
Gary, after almost 37 years with the City of Milford, is retiring as Director of Milford’s Park and Recreation Department. The Club has chosen, Gary as this year’s honoree due, to the “tremendous impact of Gary’s work on the wellbeing of the Milford Community.”

Among his many accomplishments, Emory cofounded the Bug and Bud Festival with Milford resident Dan Bond, the Lil Bucs Invitational Wrestling Tournament and the Relay for Life event for the city of Milford. His efforts have been recognized by the naming of a the Gary L. Emory Nature Trail at Goat Island and the Emory Little League Field. He also received the most prestigious award given by The Delaware Recreation and Parks Society, the George T. Sargisson Award.

In the last three decades Gary’s largest accomplishment is the creation and maintenance of the Mispillion Greenway Riverwalk, which consists of 23 phases connecting Maple Street to Goat Island by way of pedestrian and bicycle paths. Always an advocate for creating healthy lifestyle opportunities, Emory was an integral part of the land acquisition, planning, developing and maintenance that has allowed the town to revive the Mispillion River. Many lifelong residents remember when the Mispillion River was a place that people avoided just twenty years ago.

“Looking back on my career, thirty-five years ago the greenway connecting Milford was a dream, in the mid-70s it became a study, the vision began to form in 1978 when the Parks Department was created and today it has become a reality,” said Emory.

The Milford Rotary Club expects the event to sell out and encourages individuals to reserve their spot quickly. “Everyone who knows about Milford recreation and parks knows Gary and is amazed at the scope and enthusiasm that hallmarks the man’s accomplishments,” stated Milford Rotary Club member Emmett Venett. “Working under seven Mayoral administrations, Gary’s overseen a department that has grown from a $50,000 budget to one of $800,000 in 2014.”

Individuals are asked to join the Milford Rotary as they recognize Gary’s accomplishment at the Evening of Friendship at the Rookery North on January 31 at 6 pm. Tickets are available at Lou’s Bootery and the Marvel Agency on Walnut Street in downtown Milford. Cost of the event is $50 per person. Program recognition with Sponsorships are available with 8 tickets at $1,000, 4 tickets at $500 or 2 Tickets at $250. Businesses and individuals can contact Skip Pikus at 302-422-4569, Randy Marvel at 302-422-9626 or Emmett Venett at 302-242-0555 for sponsorships and/or tickets.
