Assaulting Police K-9

At approximately 11:23pm on May 31, 2015, the Milford Police attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle after observing numerous traffic violations in the area of NW Front St & Maple Ave. The operator of the vehicle refused to stop the vehicle for police and continued traveling on NW Front St. The operator of the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed before crashing the vehicle into a pedestrian foot bridge on Truitt Ave. Two passengers that were in the vehicle, exited the vehicle and surrendered to the Milford Police. The operator, positively identified as Kevin D. Hardy 30yo of Rehoboth, fled on foot from police. Milford Police K-9 located Hardy nearby and Hardy still refused to obey police commands. Milford Police K-9 then apprehended Hardy but while doing so Hardy attempted to break free from the Milford Police K-9 by punching the K-9 several times. Hardy was then tasered by Milford Police and taken into custody. Hardy refused medical treatment for his injuries sustained by the K-9 apprehension. Police state that an investigation later revealed that Hardy was under the influence of alcohol and was in possession of 1.8 grams of Marijuana. It was also discovered that the two passengers in the vehicle were attempting to get Hardy to stop the vehicle during the pursuit and were not conspiring with Hardy to flee from the Milford Police. Hardy was arrested and charged with Felony Disregarding a Police Officer Signal, Reckless Endangering 2nd Degree (2 counts), Assault 2nd Degree of Police K-9, DUI, Possession of Marijuana and multiple traffic offenses. Hardy was arraigned and committed to SCI in default of $6,225.00 secured bond.
