Milford High School has partnered with Communities in Schools (CIS), a non-profit organization that provides mentoring and support services for all MHS students. The program is directed by Ms. Jen Bostic and Mr. Keenan Mann. CIS offers everything from a clothing closet for students unable to afford uniforms to free barber services to a food pantry that food insecure students can access.
As part of Milford High School’s mentoring program, Communities in Schools partners with Dover Air Force Base for the PHASE (Professionals Helping Adolescents Succeed in Education) Mentoring Program. Students travel to the base once a month to meet with Airmen who have volunteered to be mentors through Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Delaware. Mentees spend time with their mentors learning about various careers on the base, while also receiving mentorship regarding life skills, making positive life decisions, and college/career prep.
During the lunch portion of the CIS visit last week, the Airbase mentors set up a visit with legendary running back Herschel Walker. He spoke to the students about overcoming obstacles in their lives and having a positive frame of mind. Students were able to take pictures with Mr. Walker and had a question and answer session before returning to school.
Students also have access to an after school tutoring program that will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the MHS library starting on October 28th. Families that feel that their child would benefit from this program are encouraged to contact Mr. Mann or Mrs. Bostic at 302-424-7075.
