The Greater Milford Boys & Girls Club will be hosting their annual Bowl-A-Thon on Friday, March 11 at the Milford Bowling Lanes. This year, participants will have the opportunity to bowl unlimited games from 6 to 10pm and bid on a large selection of silent auction items while helping a great cause. The Bowl-A-Thon will generate funds, secured by each bowler, team and various sponsors, that will benefit children in the local community.
“What makes the Bowl-A-Thon event so fun is being able to have some good, honest, friendly competition amongst your peers at such a charitable event,” said event organizer and B&G Club Board Member Brennon Fountain. “I have participated in the Bowl-A-Thon event for the past four years with the Carlisle Fire Company and each year it draws a different group of members that wish to come out for a good evening of competing against one another.”
Proceeds from the event will be used to enhance and expand the educational, athletic and character building programs offered by club leaders to local children. In addition to providing daily guidance and mentoring, the Club offers structured programming throughout the year which has supported improved academic performance and attendance of Milford Club kids in local elementary, middle and high schools. According to Director Tod Van Eyken, the Greater Milford Boys & Girls Club provides over $50,000 per year in financial scholarships, which is 5% of their annual budget. Van Eyken stated that the Annual Fund Campaign assists local families by creating some form of financial assistance for more than seventy percent of the children currently enrolled in the Greater Milford Boys & Girls Club.
“These scholarships are essential to grow our enrollment and fulfill our mission to inspire and enable all young people,” commented Van Eyken. “We encourage all of our kids to realize their potential as productive, responsible, and caring citizens.”
Celebrating eight years in their new location off Airport Road in Milford, the Greater Milford Boys & Girls Club has increased its efforts to establish the Milford Club as a community center in the Greater Milford Area. In addition to serving school-aged children, the Club offers services that include a full size fitness center, adult basketball and pickleball leagues and water aerobic classes. The Richard Y. Johnson Aquatic Center is also home to the Milford High School Buccaneers Swim Team, the Club’s own Milford Marlins Swim Team and is the only Boys & Girls Club in Delaware to offer swimming scholarships through the Michael Phelps Foundation. These community services are made available to Greater Milford Area residents year-round through support from fundraising events including the Bowl-A-Thon.
