According to police, the initial investigation has determined that the crash occurred last night, Friday, April 8, 2016, at approximately 11:37 pm, after officers from the Milford Police Department initiated vehicle stop on a 2002 GMC Envoy on S. Walnut Street, in Milford. As the officers began to exit their patrol vehicles, the Envoy, which was being operated by Lemar C. Campbell, 35, fled in a southbound direction from the stop. Campbell then left the Milford town limits and continued to travel in a southbound direction on N. Old State Road. As Campbell attempted to negotiate a slight right hand curve in the roadway .2 miles south of Milford, he lost control of the Envoy. The vehicle then began to rotate in a counterclockwise direction before leaving the east edge of the roadway and striking three trees. It then overturned onto its roof before coming to rest.
Lemar Campbell, who was not properly restrained at the time of the crash, was pronounced dead at the scene. Alcohol use on the part of Campbell is being considered as a factor in the crash.
Two male passengers in the vehicle were removed from the scene by EMS and transported to the Milford Memorial Hospital where they were treated and released.
Police ask that any inquiries as to the circumstances surrounding the motor vehicle stop should be directed to the Milford Police Department. N. Old State Road in the area of the crash scene was closed for approximately 3 hours as the crash was investigated and cleared. This crash remains under investigation by the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit.
