Students Work to Keep Memorial Beautiful

One of the attributes that defines this generation of students is their desire to serve others. From ringing bells for the Salvation Army to collecting canned goods for the annual food drive, Milford’s current students have a passion for school service. “It just feels good to help others,” explained Sophomore Darby Brennan.

This week, social studies teacher Mrs. Veronica Evans challenged her classes to give something back to the school community. “While the kids may not remember Kelly as a teacher here, we want to keep her memory alive. She was a wonderful teacher, coach, and mother. This garden represents some of her favorite flowers and colors. Every time someone sees it, I hope it brings a little happiness to them. That was the kind of person Kelly was.”

Kelly Tyrelll Gill was an art teacher at the Milford High School who passed away in 2009 after fighting a courageous battle with cancer. At the young age of 38, she was not only a talented artist and teacher but also served the community as she coached high school girls in the sports of field hockey and softball. As an instrumental part of developing the Night of the Arts at the Milford High School, Kelly is now honored by her colleagues and friends with the bi-annual event.

On Thursday, May 26, as the seniors prepared for their graduation ceremony, several sophomores and juniors toiled in the garden, volunteering to make MHS a little brighter while honoring the memory of one of its most beloved teachers.
