On May 25, 2016 two teams from Mispillion Elementary School competed in the Meaningful Economics and Entrepreneurship (ME) Competition at the Carter Center in Georgetown, DE. The ME Competition is a program designed to recognize student achievement in acquiring and applying knowledge in economics, entrepreneurship and personal finance.
Mispillion competed with a team of third graders and a team of 4th graders. Mrs. Sharp coached the 4th grade team of Carley Mackert, Frank Delli Paoli, Mykah Bontrager-Thomas and Joshua Beckett. Mrs. Carter coached the 3rd grade team of Vahsti Jarillo-Villa, Hanifah El Martini, Sarah Wilcutts and Ericson Garcia Lopez.
Each team participated in three events. In the production activity each team assembled products in a given amount of time. The products were judged in a variety of areas including following directions, neatness and product completion. Each team also took a written test to evaluate their knowledge of economics concepts. The third event was problem solving. Students designed a product to solve a given problem, created an advertising campaign and made a two-minute commercial which they presented before a panel of judges.
Many parents attended the awards presentation following the competition. The 3rd grade team earned 2nd place for economic knowledge and the 4th grade team earned 1st place for economic knowledge.
