Quick, finish this sentence…

”The greatest concert I’ve ever seen was ___________________”. Why was it the greatest concert? Was it the music, the atmosphere, maybe you met someone special.

As you might imagine, being in the business that I’m in, I’ve seen a ton of concerts over the years. Billy Joel, Dave Matthews Band, Michael Jackson, Jimmy Buffett…even Neil Diamond and Barry Manilow, and of course, my band, RUSH. (15 times, but who’s counting). Surprisingly, my greatest concert wasn’t a RUSH concert. For me, the greatest concert I’ve ever seen was Pink Floyd’s “Division Bell” tour at The Vet in Philadelphia during the summer of 1994.
I had just started working for Delmarva Broadcasting Company in Wilmington (93-7, WSTW), and my boss surprised me with floor seats and backstage passes. Having been a fan of Pink Floyd for more than 20 years, I was in shock. Little did I know at the time that it would be Pink Floyd’s final tour as a band.

Concert day arrived and off I went to pick up my date, a first date no less, and head to the show. When I got to her place, she told me she was running about 30 minutes late. Wait, WHAT? Finally, after what seemed like a lifetime, we were on I-95 headed for Philly. Well, between traffic and our late start, we missed the backstage meet and greet. The chance of a lifetime, gone because of lipstick and hair spray. Curse you Monica.

I did my best to put that behind me and concentrate on what was surely going to be a great show, and it was. From the moment we settled into our seats, about 20 rows back from the stage, on that perfect June night with our $8 beers and our souvenir Pink Floyd seat cushions, and watched as David Gilmour, Nick Mason, Richard Wright and the rest of the band took the stage, I knew we were in for something special.

From the opening song Astronomy Domine through cuts from Dark Side Of The Moon, The Wall, Wish You Were Here, The Division Bell and others, it was an amazing night. But it wasn’t the music alone that made the night so great. Add to it the incredible light show, special effects, like the giant inflatable pig roaring over my head, and perfect weather. It was, from beginning to encore, the greatest concert I’ve ever seen.

What’s yours?
