MSD Names Parsley MHS Assistant Principal

Jesse Parsley says that he has been considering a move to administration for some time. He says that as a classroom teacher, he has a direct impact on the students and teachers he sees daily, but as an administrator, his “four walls” are bigger and the impact is larger. On Monday, June 20, Milford School District Board of Education approved his appointment as the new assistant principal at Milford High School. Shawn Snyder, who was an assistant principal at the school, was appointed Interim Principal after Dr. Kelly Green left to take a position in Dover.

“There are so many things we can do to ensure our high school graduates are college and career ready,” said Mr. Parsley. “I am hoping that I can help lead the way in these efforts. As a community, we are fortunate to have such an awesome group of students and teachers at the high school. Being part of the overall growth of the building is exciting for me. I know there have been some challenges in recent years, but feel strongly that we as a district are heading in the right direction.”

Mr. Parsley grew up in western Pennsylvania, moving to Milford 24 years ago. Both of his daughters are Milford High School graduates. Mr. Parsley began his career 13 years ago at Woodbridge High School before coming to Milford in his second year of teaching. Prior to earning his teaching degree, Mr. Parsley spent six years in the United States Army and 12 in the automobile business. With many family and friends in the education business, Mr. Parsley said that he knew it was something he always wanted to do. He worked 40 hours a week and took 12 to 15 credits a semester until he completed his degree. His wife, Renee, is a teacher and administrator as well. His brother, Don, has been teaching in Milford for more than 31 years.

“Managing my time will be the biggest challenge I face,” Mr. Parsley said. “As many people know, the paperwork involved in the day-to-day running of a building can be daunting. For me, spending time in classrooms with the students and teachers is important to me, so managing the paperwork flow will be crucial. One of the biggest areas of gain will be from our Special Education and English Language Learner populations. These students are capable of so much and, with the right resources and teaching practices, the sky is the limit.”

Mr. Parsley says that funding is always an issue at secondary schools throughout Delaware and the rest of the country. He says that federal and state mandated programs that are unfunded along with reduction in funding to local districts has had a huge impact on secondary schools. In addition, lack of funding for technology or to upgrade and build new facilities also has a detrimental effect on students at the secondary level.

“We need to find ways to do more with less,” Mr. Parsley said. “For example, when discussing technology, there are districts across the country that have implemented “Bring Your Own Device” programs where students can access curriculum materials on their own tablet or laptop. Some textbook publishers have online only versions of textbooks that are less expensive than traditional materials. Buildings like Milford Central Academy with solar panels have reduced operating costs over older buildings like our current high school. As our community grows, we need to consider additional facilities and educational programs. Our top priority has to be our next generation of citizens.”

Mr. Parsley will take the position as assistant principal on July 1, 2016. Mr. Snyder will act as the interim principal while going through the interview process to hire a new replacement. If he is chosen for as the permanent principal at the school, a new assistant will be hired to replace him. If someone else is chosen for the position, Mr. Snyder will return to the assistant principal position which he has held for over a year.
