St. Johns To Host Oktoberfest, Sept 23-24

ggSt. Johns Church in Milford will host their annual Oktoberfest on September 23 from 6 to 10pm and September 24 10am to10pm. This year, the church will celebrate their 26th Annual event. The festivities will kick off on Friday evening with live music from local favorites The Funsters and continue into Saturday, celebrating European cultures through live entertainment, food and fun.

The original Oktoberfest in Germany started in 1810 to celebrate a royal weeding in Munich, Germany and has continued as an annual tradition around the world. The Oktoberfest celebrations in Milford began in 1990 by a German man named Karl Thomas and wife Renate as a way to raise money for St. Johns Church. Revenue made from the first year went to put a new roof on the church.

“The Oktoberfest is a labor of love for many of our parishioners, including myself,” said Amanda Fulton, Oktoberfest organizer. “My favorite part of Oktoberfest is seeing our Parish family come together year after year to make it all happen.  From the core group that are the backbone of the event, working on specific aspects months in advance, to the dozens of volunteers that spend anywhere from a few hours to the entire two days working, all of these familiar faces are why the Oktoberfest is a continual success.”

The festivities will kick off on Friday evening, October 2 at 6 pm with The Funsters. The international food court this year will be serving traditional German entrees, along with Italian, Hispanic, Polish, and Filipino dishes. Homemade crab cakes, hamburgers, hot dogs, french fries, Italian ice, pretzels and homemade baked desserts will also be on the menu.

On Saturday the festivities include live entertainment by German band Immergrun Musikanten, Beatles cover band Glass Onion and DJ Lucky. Families can also enjoy . inflatable games including a slide, moon walk, and obstacle course. A petting zoo and pony rides will be open for children to enjoy as well.

“The Oktoberfest is very much a family event. While we feature live bands and traditional Oktoberfest food and adult beverages, we also have a variety of food and sweets for all ages,” said Fulton. “There are also plenty of activities for the kids-  three inflatables will run both days, and on Saturday we have children’s games, face painting, the Milford High School FFA Petting Zoo, fire truck rides by Slaughter Beach Fire Co. and even helicopter rides by J & J Shop Heliair.”

St. John the Apostle’s Church welcomes all to enjoy the food, music and fun of the 26th Annual German Oktoberfest weekend beginning on Friday, September 23 through Saturday, September 24. St. John’s Church is located on 506 Seabury Avenue and there is no admission fee. For more information, individuals can contact St. John’s at 422-5123.

“I hope that as people leave the Oktoberfest they feel as though they’ve had a true international experience, enjoyed time with friends and neighbors, and are exhausted from a great day,” said Fulton.
