The students of Milford High School’s Drama Club will present The Secret Garden, a play based on the novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett on Thursday, November 17 at 7:00 PM, Friday, November 18 at 7:00 PM and Saturday, November 19 at 1:00 PM.
The Secret Garden is an endearing story about a stubborn little girl, a self-pitying boy and a distant father who all learn important lessons about life and themselves with the help of a young man who shares the magic of nature with them.
Director Carissa Meiklejohn says, “I read this book in fifth grade and was enraptured by the tale. As someone who loves the outdoors, I really enjoy the message of how nature can lift the spirits.”
Milford High School senior Kieran Pheasant will perform the lead role of Mary Lennox, a girl born to wealthy British parents in India that do not want the child. After a cholera epidemic kills both of her parents, Mary is sent to live with her Uncle in England. Beginning the story as a selfish, rude girl, Mary’s personality and sense of what is important in life transforms through her experiences with others.
Pheasant has enjoyed learning the role of Mary as it has allowed her to expand her experience as an actor. “Unlike Mary I am not bratty or selfish and this was a chance to experience something new,” said Pheasant. “I hope the audience feels inspired and has a connection with the characters.” This will be Pheasant’s third year with Milford High School Drama, performing in earlier shows including Dracula, Aladdin, Shrek and Music Man.
Milford High School senior Ethan Dehel will perform the lead role of Dickon, a young boy that Mary meets. Dickon is good natured and has a way with animals. “He is a happy go lucky character and he is the catalyst that changes Mary,” said Dehel. “I hope the audience feels emotionaly attached to the characters and learn from their ability to have hard times but move forward.” A veteran of the performance stage, Dehel has performed in Milford High School plays including Little Women, Seussical, Once Upon a Mattress, Shrek and Aladdin.
Additional cast members in this production include Tobias Biro, Amire Collins, Valeria Coverdale, Jessica Creigh, Emma Dehel, Millisen Dill, William Dorey, Lauren Edwards, Mark Hollingsworth, Melina Hudson, Rebecca Hutchinson, Mya MacFarland, Skylar Parnell, Jennifer Rust, Barbara Walker, Gabriel White and Mason Yoka.
Performances will be held in the Milford High School Auditorium on Thursday, November 17 at 7:00 PM, Friday, November 18 at 7:00 PM and Saturday, November 19 at 1:00 PM. Tickets will be available at the door, $5 for ages 2-18 years old and 60 or older and $7 for all others.
