December’s Senior Spotlight: Deja Rodriguez-Santiago

nnBy Patrick Helmick

Deja Rodriguez-Santiago is a highly engaged multi-talented young lady. Deja is a multi sport and dual varsity sport athlete. Deja in the fall played Field Hockey as well as finished second in the Henlopen Conference meet for cross country. She took these talents to be the leading runner to help the girls cross country team go undefeated and win the Henlopen Conference Championship. To add to her sports resume, in the spring Deja will play soccer and run track. Deja finished second at the state meet, in the two mile, in track last year and is anticipating another great track season. On top of all of her athletic accomplishments Deja is an honor role student with two Advanced Placement classes and is a member of the National Honor Society.

Deja’s primary focus at Milford Senior High School is to prepare for college by challenging herself academically, athletically and socially. Deja said, “High school is a small but very important step to the rest of your life. Take advantage of the opportunities to excel in high school so you’re better prepared for what is next.”

When asked about her favorite Teacher or Coach at the high school, Deja’s favorite teacher at MHS is Seth Buford who is her English teacher. “Mr. Buford is always there to help and give advice. I could not have gotten through these last two stressful years without his guidance and encouragement. Mr. Buford felt honored by Deja’s comments and said that she is a wonderful young woman and a perfect example of a student athlete and a Buccaneer.

Deja’s favorite coach is her field hockey coach Andrea Fleming. Deja said, “She has influenced me to be the best I can be on and off the hockey field. I’ve personally grown more confidence, leadership, and hard working skills because of her.” Deja went on to say “words could not describe how grateful I am to have these two adults in my life.”

Looking forward in her senior year, Deja is planning to go to college and pursue a Bachelor’s degree and continue her running career. She is currently in the process of narrowing down what schools she wants to apply to but is very interested in the University of Delaware.. We all wish Deja Rodriguez-Santiago much success in her senior year and look forward to her performance on the soccer field and on the track.
